William Paret papers, 1849-1911.

Topics include clergy and diocesan affairs; Epiphany Parish, Washington, D.C., 1876-1885; Paret's election and consecration as Bishop of Maryland, 1885; clerical salaries; parish reports; opposition to High Church practices; Warfield College School; Hannah More Academy; work of the laity; missions; European travels, 1910; and biographical materials. Uncatalogued materials include a scrapbook containing letters from many bishops, chiefly congratulations on Paret's consecration as bishop, and clippings relating to his career. Another scrapbook holds the bishop's circulars, pastoral letters, visitation notices, and miscellaneous papers and photographs. Other volumes are Bishop Paret's official journals, 1885-1911, plus three working diaries, 1887-1895; his private register of baptisms, marriages, and funerals, 1849-1883; a private register of baptisms performed while rector of Epiphany Parish, Washington, D.C., 1876-1881; a record book of candidates for orders, 1893-1910; a notebook on various subjects, chiefly religious; and two record books of visitations, including answers to questionnaires from virtually every parish in the Diocese of Maryland, 1905-1906 and 1909-1910. There are also numerous sermons, mostly printed but some typed or handwritten, including Paret's sermons for the use of lay readers. An architectural plan by T. Buckler Ghequier, with an accompanying letter (in the repository's Architecture file), represent the bishop's interest in a "General Plan for Rural Chapels for Colored People", 1886. Much else concerns his furtherance of Church work for Blacks. Other subjects in the boxed collection include the Armenian massacres, 1895; parochial affairs, particularly St. Matthew's Parish, Garrett County; the Reverend James Newman, 1886; and the Church of the Messiah in the Baltimore fire, 1904. There are also papers of Bishop John Gardner Murray as executor of Bishop Paret's estate, and miscellaneous correspondence.
